How we collect and use information

We will use the information you provide on your benefits claim form along with any supporting evidence you send us, to process your claim for housing benefit, Council Tax support and free school meals (where applicable).

We may check information you have provided, or information about you that has been submitted by a third party, with other information held by us. We may also pass information to a third party to verify data, prevent or detect crime and protect public funds. This may include checking with other sources within the Council, The Pension Service, Job Centre Plus, HM Revenues & Customs, the Valuation Office Agency, providers of specialist hostels for homeless people and other Council’s.

The Council may also use your data to deal with the licensing of private properties, to check school attendance, to support the national Troubled Families’ programme, to collect debts such as council rents and council tax and to prevent and detect fraud. We will also give details of who lives at your address to the Electoral Registration Officer in order to maintain the electoral roll. We may also use your mobile number for the purpose of SMS bill payment reminders.

We may be required by law to pass information to the Department for Work and Pensions, HM Revenues & Customs and the Audit Commission. We may share the details with other organisations that inspect or handle public funds, and a credit reference agency. This is to help work out and pay benefits, collect council tax and prevent and detect fraud.

What you can expect from us

Blackburn with Darwen Council will use the information you have supplied in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. We will only share your information where there is a legal obligation to do so or in accordance with the consent submitted on your declaration form.
