Discounts & exemptions
Council tax is collected by your council. It helps to meet the cost of local services and also to contribute towards the cost of fire brigade and police services.
Every domestic property in Blackburn with Darwen will have a council tax bill, whether it is owned, rented or empty.
The amount of council tax you pay is worked out based upon what council tax band your property is in, with property exemptions, discounts and council tax support also being available.
A bill is generally sent in mid March each financial year and runs from April 1 to March 31.
If you are responsible for paying council tax you must pay it but there are discounts, exemptions and council tax support available to those who are eligible.
From the 1st April 2015 the discounts awarded to unoccupied properties in Blackburn with Darwen are changing and as a result some people will be asked to pay more.
Unoccupied & Unfurnished properties
The 100% discount that is currently granted to properties that have been unoccupied and unfurnished for up to 6 months will be reduced to 3 months. Those properties that have already been empty and unfurnished for more than 3 months will be liable for 100% Council Tax charge from 1st April 2015.
