The Register Office in Blackburn holds all records of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnership formations that have taken place in Blackburn with Darwen since 1st July 1837.

Genealogy is a fast growing pastime for many people. We endeavor to comply with all requests received but we cannot undertake extensive and vague searches.

There are extensive tools family historians can access.

  • Blackburn central library has a family history section holding various source materials, such as parish records, local papers etc. It also holds microfiche copies of the General Register Office Index, sometimes known as the Saint Catherine's House indexes, which provide a district, year and quarter.
  • There is also a local family history society whose members are welcoming and happy to pass their expertise onto new starters.
  • The largest resource available, however, is the Internet. Genealogy is one of the largest categories. Just type “family history” into your search engine and stand back for the thousands of sites available.

Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, in conjunction with the Blackburn Family History Society, has created an index of all the births, deaths and marriages occurring in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen from 1st July 1837 to 31st December 2000

The indexes can be found on

We are very grateful to the society and its members for the valuable work they have done for the benefit of all.
