The Museum and art gallery hosts a wide range of exhibitions, events and activities and also has collections of Japanese prints, the Hart collection of books, coins and medieval manuscripts, an award-winning South Asian gallery, the history of Blackburn, the Egyptian Mummy, Fine and Decorative Art and the Bowdler collection of world beetles.

The museum is situated close to the old town hall and pedestrians will see a zebra crossing by standing with the town hall to their right. On crossing this proceed to the street to the left of the crossing where the museum can be found on the right hand side. There are town centre pay and display car parks around the town and above the shopping centre. Short stay pay and display spaces are located adjacent to the museum with designated disabled parking spaces.
Admission is free and there is disabled access to all areas including toilet facilities.
