The Council has a number of pitches and courts available for hire for different sports.

Playing fields

Pleasington playing fields

This is the premiere outdoor sports facility within the Borough, open all year round.

  • It has 12 full size football pitches, six of which are of sand construction and drain excellently. The others being of a soil based construction.
  • Changing rooms and car parking are excellent and can accommodate almost any size of competition.
  • Pleasington is the home of Blackburn Combination who play on Saturday afternoons, Blackburn Sunday league who play on a Sunday morning and the East Lancs alliance league who play on Saturday mornings.
  • The schools town team boys and girls also play at this facility on Saturday mornings.
  • Spectators are always welcome and it is a good opportunity to see the best amateur talent in the area.
  • Pleasington is also the home of the famous Blackburn with Darwen (Forbes Solicitors sponsored) annual pre season National football festival.
  • Pleasington also has 10 cricket wickets. Midweek and weekend cricket leagues play throughout the summer months.

Blacksnape playing fields

  • The facilities at Blacksnape have been recently upgraded thanks to an investment in facilities from the Football Foundation, The Council and Darwen Academy. The total investment in this facility was £760.000 with £525,000 coming in from the Football foundation.
  • New stone built changing rooms designed to the latest FA specifications have been constructed to deliver facilities for girl’s football and disabled facilities to maximize usage of the facilities.
  • Blacksnape playing fields enjoy a beautiful position overlooking the town and Darwen tower.
  • The pitches are currently being used by Blackburn Combination on a Saturday, Blackburn Sunday League and the East Lancashire Alliance league on Sundays.
  • From the 2013/14 season teams will be using facilities from the Bolton Leagues.
  • There are six, three quarter and full size pitches for hire.
  • Plus Two 9v9 pitches
  • Four Synthetic cricket wickets available.
  • Changing facilities to accommodate all teams.

Pleckgate playing fields

  • Pleckgate playing fields are a major outdoor facility in the town. Based within the boundaries, of Pleckgate School.
  • The pitches available include:
    • 2 full size Sand/ Grass pitches.
    • 3 three quarter junior pitches.
  • There are changing facilities and car parking close by.
  • This venue caters for bookings from several leagues and is played on in the morning and afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays during the football season.

Pleckgate hockey pitch

Blackburn Northern Sports Club has worked hard over many years to raise the funds for this new synthetic pitch, which opened Autumn 2006.

  • Sports England's Community Club awarded the club £431,000 to fund the pitches. This was supplemented by money raised by the club.
  • Pleckgate High School and Blackburn with Darwen Council have agreed a partnership with the club and use of land at the back of the school.
  • The pitch is used by the school during the day and community bookings are taken evenings and weekends for football and hockey with priority given to Blackburn Northern and hockey bookings.
  • Hockey development activities are organised,supported by English hockey.

    • May, June, July and August: Monday - Friday 10am - 8pm Saturday and Sunday 12noon - 8pm
    • September: Weekends only 12 noon until dusk
  • 3 Synthetic courts
  • 6 Shale courts
  • 1 Multi sports area
  • Tennis Courts will be free. No need to book just turn up.
  • This facility will not be staffed.

Athletics track

  • The track caters for many club events over a year and hosts all the sports days for local schools.

Cross country course

  • Nationally famous cross-country course
  • holds several events throughout the year for various groups, such as Lancashire police and schools.

Showfield

  • Witton Country Park, Preston Old Road, Blackburn. BB2 2TP
  • Main venue for all the large events in the town including the bonfire, show jumping and the annual fair at Easter.
  • Car parking facilities
  • Can accommodate events with around 20,000 people.
  • Catering facilities are available throughout the summer months at the 'Pavilion in the Park'.
