River Darwen Parkway and Higher Croft Woods

Service information

  • River DarwenThe 55 hectares site, on the south side of Blackburn is situated along the River Darwen, the Blackburn-Manchester railway line and alongside Highercroft Brook.
  • There is a Sustrans cycle route going through the site which links to Witton Country Park and Pleasington via the Leeds and Liverpool canal.
  • The diverse habitats are home to a wide variety of birds, mammals and insects.
  • The area is a designated Biological Heritage Site (BHS) which signifies its importance for nature conservation in the county.
  • The site also received a Local Nature Reserve status in 2005.

Directions from the nearest town

1 mile from Blackburn town centre, off the A666 heading towards Darwen, close to the home of Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Frequent bus services run between Blackburn and Darwen along the A666.

There are two car parks at the two extremities of the site;

  • at the rear of the Aqueduct pub, Bolton Road, Ewood
  • opposite the Hindle Arms on Stopes Brow, Lower Darwen
