Age check - Preventing the sale of age restricted products to children

Age Check, a retailer due diligence resource, has been developed to assist you and your staff in refusing approaches from young people seeking to purchase age restricted goods.

Age Check is designed for you, in consultation with retailers and the Police, to help you and your staff make the right decisions when it comes to selling these products. The resource is now web based to allow it to be updated when needed. This is to ensure that you receive the latest up-to-date information to assist you in preventing underage sales.

The Equality Act 2010 - Important Information

This act deals with age discrimination. It is now illegal to discriminate in the sale and supply of goods, services and facilities to anyone aged 18 or over.

In order for businesses that sell age restricted goods to benefit from the exemption i.e. to operate a Check 25 policy, a notice must be displayed stating that the goods will not be provided to a person who:

  1. Appears to be less than the specified age, and:
  2. Fails to produce satisfactory ID to prove their age

You will find a notice on the Age Check website which you can download. This notice must be displayed to ensure that you are complying with this requirement.
