Care and repair

Our aim

“To help people to live independently and to remain in their own homes for as long as possible”

Care and repair is a home improvement agency incorporated within care services. The agency offers a minor works grant to keep property wind and weather tight and safe. The type of work carried out includes: roofs, windows, doors and rewiring. In some cases, assistance can be offered with new sinks, toilets and baths, and adaptations.

Disabled adaptations

Care services is also responsible for administering Disabled Facilities Grants (DFG). After a client has been assessed by the occupational therapist as needing adaptations, the referral is sent to social services to go to the adaptations panel. At the panel, referrals are given a priority depending on the adaptation required. The client is then visited to see if they are able to make a disabled facilities grant (DFG) application. Part of the application involves a financial assessment of the client to see if they have to make a contribution towards the cost of the work. Once the client has been assessed, our surveyor then arranges for the work to be carried out, with a final inspection upon completion. The type of adaptations organised include level access showers, stairlifts, ramps and handrails.

Handyperson scheme

The scheme offers assistance with small repairs around the home, e.g. easing doors, loose slates, cleaning gutters for older people who own their own home. It also provides the fitting of small aids and equipment such as grabrails, shower seats and handrails. The adaptation and repair worker will also fit security devices such as door chains and window locks.
