SHIELD scheme

SHIELD - A free home safety scheme for the over 65's

Safer Homes, Information, Education and Lifestyle Dynamics

What is the SHIELD home safety scheme?

The scheme was launched in May 2002 and is a council managed scheme to help people remain safe in their own home and increase their independence.

A home safety advisor is employed by the scheme to carry out a free home safety check and do minor repairs to help prevent accidents such as falls, burns and scalds. The visits are confidential and information will not be given to anyone without your permission.

Can anyone have a home safety check?

The scheme is funded only for people aged 65 and over living alone or in a household with people of a similar age, within the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen.

Is the scheme free?

Yes, it really is free if you are aged over 65. This is because there is special funding for a limited period, so take advantage of the scheme now.

What happens at the home safety check?

The home safety advisor will look at each room and assess any risk to you of a home accident, give advice on simple no-cost changes you can make and do these for you if you are unable to do them for yourself. You may also be given items such as a non-slip bath mat or a lightweight kettle, which will help you carry out tasks more safely.

What sort of repairs will be done?

These will usually be minor ones such as securing loose carpet, fitting extension cables and checking electric plugs are correctly wired. Some items can be replaced if they are unsafe.
