Mental health

Blackburn with Darwen social services department, in partnership with Blackburn and Darwen Primary Care Trust, commissions and provides a wide range of services to, and support for, people with mental illness and their carers.

Primary treatment will probably be in the hands of someone's own GP, but they may be referred on to specialist community teams who work together with service users to promote independence, confidence and a better quality of life.

Among the services available to anyone with mental health problems are:

  • Initial assessment and advice from a specialist brief intervention team (ABIT)
  • Continued help from a Community Mental Health Team (CMHT)
  • Individual care co-ordinators
  • Support with employment opportunities
  • Advice and assistance with housing and welfare
  • Training in basic skills

Service users are encouraged to play their part and make their views known.
