The emergency funeral service is available for weekends and Bank Holidays for deaths that have occurred in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen and/or for burials taking place in the Blackburn with Darwen.
Cremations can only be dealt with during the Registrar's normal office hours.
The emergency service is available:
- Saturday - 10am until 4pm
- Sunday and Bank Holiday - 10am until 2pm
- Sunday before a Bank Holiday – 10am to 4pm

Arranging a burial in Blackburn with Darwen for deaths occurring within Blackburn with Darwen
You must first get a medical certificate of cause of death from the hospital, hospice or a qualified medical practitioner before contacting the registrar. Before issuing the certificate for burial the Registrar has by law to make certain that the death does not need to be referred to H.M Coroner for consideration and decision.
If the Registrar is able to issue the certificate for burial, arrangements will be made for the qualified informant to meet with the Registrar to issue the certificate for burial.
When the certificate for burial is issued and if the burial is to take place in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen, the Registrar will contact the cemeteries duty officer who will advise when a funeral can take place.
You will then need to deliver the certificate for burial issued by the Registrar to the cemeteries duty officer before the funeral can take place.
The informant is then required to register the death on the next working day, please ring 01254 588660 to make an appointment.
Arranging a burial in the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen for deaths occurred elsewhere.
You must first get a certificate for burial issued by a Registrar outside the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen.
When you have a valid certificate of burial contact the Blackburn with Darwen Registrar as above who will then advise when a funeral can take place.
You will then have to deliver the certificate for burial to the cemeteries duty officer before the funeral can take place.
