Councillor Mohammed KhanCouncillor Mohammed Khan was born and raised in Pakistan and came to England, Blackburn in June 1965. 

He worked and studied at Blackburn College in the subject of Textiles and was later employed in the textile industry in USA, which is also where he studied Business Management.

On returning to Blackburn, he returned to working in the textile industry, until he opened his own general food store in 1985.

Councillor Khan was first elected as a Member in 1992, where he represented the Bank Top Ward, now known as Wensley Fold Ward. He held the position of Executive Member for Housing and Neighbourhood Services between 1999 and 2007 and was also Deputy Leader of the Council from 2002 until 2007. He was Mayor of the Borough in 2008-2009.

From 2010, he served as Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care until he was elected leader in 2015.

Throughout this period Councillor Khan was a member of various Council Committees, including; Chief Officers Employment Committee, Chief Executive’s Employment Committee, Blackburn with Darwen Strategic Partnership Board and Executive, Economic Regeneration Board, Policy and Review Committee and numerous Scrutiny Committees. He was also Chairman of Lancashire Strategic Housing Partnership Board, Executive Member of North West Housing Forum, Executive Member for North West Regional Assembly Housing Advisory Group, Non Executive Director Care Trust Plus BWD and Executive Member of East Lancashire Housing market Renewal.

In recognition for his work in local government Councillor Khan was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours for 2007.
