National Festival of Making

The National Festival of Making will return to Blackburn this month, with all sorts of activities taking place around the town centre on both Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June.  Blackburn Library will be host to a number of the special events planned for those two days, including an event offered as a partnership between the library and the charity Arts 2 Heal called ‘Why Bees Matter’.  Participants will make bee themed money saving tins from upcycled materials at this free drop in event on Saturday 15th, between 10 am and 2 pm.

As part of the festival, some of the most recognisable names in fashion, design and art will sit alongside the British creative, arts and manufacturing industries' brave, new innovators in a series of FREE talks and panel discussions on Friday 14th - Sunday 16th June at various times and locations around Blackburn town centre.  These are organised by Creative Lancashire and open to all.

The talks provide a rare opportunity for anyone to learn more about the making industries in their most diverse forms and guests already announced include critically-acclaimed ceramicist, Halima Cassell and profoundly influential, 'new wave' designer and creator of record sleeves by Buzzcocks and Duran DuranMalcolm Garrett, fashion entrepreneur, Patrick Grant and founder of schools learning programme, FixpertsDaniel Charny.  Bringing highly specialist perspectives from distinct creative and industry backgrounds, the festival also welcomes Philippa Glover of Liverpool-based advanced robotics company, CNC RoboticsDarren Henley, Chief ~Executive of Arts Council EnglandAndria Zafirakou from creativity-in-schools initiative, Artists in Residence, Co-founder of The National Festival of Making, Wayne Hemmingway and Chief Executive of Manchester International FestivalChristine Cort and many more.  Creatives and makers will also have the opportunity to gain business support and advice by pre-booking a slot for one of the Maker Development Surgery Sessions during the festival weekend.

Blackburn Children's Literature Festival

Hot on the heels of the Festival of Making comes the second Blackburn Children's Literature Festival, the brainchild of locally born author Christina Gabbitas.  Although most of the events are aimed specifically at invited school groups, there will be opportunities for the public to get involved and join the fun too:

Tuesday 18th June, 7 pm

Don't miss the opportunity to meet Michael Bradley of The Undertones, who will be signing copies of his new book Teenage Kicks: My Life as an Undertone at Liz n Lil's Cafe on the corner of Northgate and King William Street.  Tickets cost £7.50, and can be booked online at http://www.childrensliteraturefestivals.com.  Contact info@childrensliteraturefestivals.com, or phone 0800 001 6052.

Saturday 22nd June, 10 am - 4 pm

Families and Community Day at King George's Hall, Blackburn.  This will be an opportunity for the public to find out about what all the children have been up to in the schools' workshops during the week.  Authors Andy Seed, Christina Gabbitas, Donavan Christopher, Salma Zaman, Hilary Robinson and Nigel Womack and illustrators Liz Million, Ursula Hurst and Kiran Khan will all be leading workshops with children and families throughout the day.  Book online at http://www.blackburncrf.com to be sure of getting a place.

Our partners at Booktrust are having a special bedtime story themed celebration in June called 'Pyjamarama'.  As well as the usual story and rhyme time session, a simple craft activity will be available for pre-school children to enjoy at Darwen Library on Wednesday 5th June, and Wordsworth the library mascot will be there in his brand new nightshirt.  Booktrust have also donated free copies of a picture book called 'Car, Car, Truck, Jeep' which we'll be giving away from all libraries at the regular weekly story times, and afterwards while stocks last.  Look out for Wordsworth dropping in to a library near you this month, too.

Jason's Magic Railway comes to Blackburn

Author Mark Hesketh Jones will be reading from his new children's book, Jason's Magic Railway at Blackburn Library on Tuesday 11th June, starting at 7 pm.  A keen historian, Mark set his book in Blackburn at the time of the Cotton Famine in 1862.  The main character, Jason Brindle, has been transported there through a tunnel in his model railway, meeting new characters and having lots of adventures along the way, but how will he ever get home?  Admission is free of charge, so do come along to meet Mark and find out more about his new book

Chatterbooks at Darwen Library

The Chatterbooks junior reading group meets every month at Darwen LIbrary for children age 8 - 11 years.  This month the group will be enjoying games and activities related to David Walliams and Adam Blade books.  Places are limited, but we do currently have a few vacancies at the Chatterbooks group so if you're interested in joining, please contact Darwen Library (01254) 706021.

New activities now on offer

Our ever enterprising band of library volunteers are always looking for new ways to encourage people to visit the libraries, and this month sees some additional activities and events inserted into the regular programme:

  • Weekly drop-in sessions at Mill Hill Library:  Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available every Tuesday afternoon between 2 & 4 pm if people want to call in for a brew and a chat.
  • Knit and Natter at Cherry Tree Library:  The frequency of these sessions has increased due to demand, and the group now meets every Friday afternoon between 2.30 and 3.30 pm.

Sew & Sow

The group continues to meet weekly alternating between Cherry Tree and Mill Hill Libraries.  All are welcome to attend.  Group members usually pay £2 per week to cover costs, but a free trial session is also available.  This month's programme is:

  • 4th June, Gardening at Cherry Tree Library
  • 11th June, Mosaics at Mill Hill Community Centre
  • 18th June, Gardening at Cherry Tree Library
  • 25th June, Sewing at Mill Hill Community Centre

All meetings are on Tuesdays from 10 am - 12 pm.  Phone Andrew Orr on 01254 587941 for more information.
