£200 available to win, in the Time to Read 'Book Bingo' promotion

Libraries all across the North West will be offering the chance to read your way to cash prizes in the coming months with our new Book Bingo game.  Simply collect an entry form from one of our libraries, and then read your way across the chart with just five books - remembering to list which books you read on the back.  Taking part is absolutely FREE, and all forms correctly completed and returned by Monday 1st July 2019 will be entered into a prize draw.  First prize is £200, with three 'runner up' prizes of £100 each also available.  Please note that to be eligible for a prize entrants must be age 16 years or over.  The full rules are available online at http://www.time-to-read.co.uk/bingo.

Local Lancashire author to visit Blackburn Library

Catherine Finch has been shortlisted and placed in several competitions including Flash 500, TSS and the Bath Short Story Award 2017.  A former headteacher, since retiring she has published two novels.  The first, Walking Apart, is set in the Ribble Valley and tells the story of David and Helen, charting the strain put on their relationship after more than 30 years of marriage as David's retirement forces them to confront the very different goals they have for this stage in their lives.  Her second book, Holding On Letting Go, was published in late 2018 and explores some of the issues facing an ex-pat family through their relationships and experience of living and working in France.  Catherine will be at Blackburn Library on Wednesday 17th April to talk about her books.  Copies will be available to buy on the night.  The talk starts at 7 pm, and tickets are available (cost £3, including refreshments) from the library.

Secret Garden holiday fun in BwD libraries

Libraries will be teaming up with Sustainable Neighbourhoods again to offer family story and craft sessions when the children are off school.  This time, the theme is The Secret Garden and children from 4 - 10 can enjoy making tissue paper flowers, colouring pictures and line art drawing.  Entry to the events is free of charge, but space is limited, so please request tickets from the relevant library in advance to avoid disappointment on the day.  As these are family events, children should be accompanied by an adult, and the events will run at the following times:

  • Monday 15th April, 2 - 3 pm, Cherry Tree (Livesey) Library
  • Tuesday 16th April, 2 - 3 pm, Blackburn Library
  • Wednesday 17th April, 2 - 3 pm, Darwen Library
  • Thursday 18th April, 10.30 - 11.30 am, Roman Road Library
  • Thursday 18th April, 2 - 3 pm, Mill Hill library.

Darwen Library will also be offering an egg-cellent Easter treasure trail, so drop in between 6th and 20th April to take part, free of charge.  The trail is suitable for children age 4 - 12, and you can also colour in an Easter Egg to add to our display.

Confidence through Creativity

As well as running our own library events, a number of other agencies run activities and events at library buildings.  One such is charity Arts2Heal, which offers free art therapy workshops at Blackburn Central Library.  Their new project called Confidence through Creativity will be starting soon, and offers the chance to improve mental health while also having a lot of fun.  For bookings or more information, please email contact@arts2heal.org.
