A Mayoress, or Mayor's Consort, is appointed by the Mayor to support him or her during the year in office.Councillor Jim Shorrock is the Mayor of the Borough for 2019/2020.  This year the Mayor will be supported by the Mayoress Mrs Linda Mahon and the Consort Mr Mark Joyce.

The Deputy Mayor for 2019/2020 is Councillor Iftakhar Hussain.

One of the Mayor's most important tasks is to chair council meetings, to keep order and to ensure the rules of debate are being followed.

When representing the Borough, the Mayor wears a chain of office and, on some occasions, the civic robes as well. In addition to acting as First Citizen of the Borough, the Mayor hosts visits from representatives of our twin towns, attends functions such as Remembrance Sunday and gets involved in fund raising for the Mayor's chosen charity.   This year the chosen charities are:

  • Thomas

  • Derian House

  • Every Action Has Consequences – EAHCONSEQUENCES

  • Youth Action

If you or your organisation requires any further information about the charity or if you can offer any assistance in fund raising please contact the Mayor's Office.

The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen attends nearly 500 engagements during the Civic year and each event is processed by the staff of the Mayor's Office. In view of the Mayor's busy schedule it is essential that each invitation is put in writing at least 10 working days before the date of the event.

Upon the Mayor's acceptance of an invitation, the Mayor's Office will issue written confirmation and will ask that a Civic proforma be completed and returned. The form is used to ascertain essential details for the Mayor's information such as: nature of event, parking arrangements for civic vehicle and the dress requirement for the Mayor and any other relevant information.
