Equipment to help you

Items of minor equipment are available for people over the age of 18, who live in Blackburn with Darwen and who need practical help due to sight or hearing loss, physical or learning disabilities, frailty or illness. These can sometimes be all that is needed to help you to maintain your independence and quality of life.

However, before you receive this service we do need to make an assessment of how great the risks are and what sort of help you need.

Adult social care needs assessment

You can use this if you think you need straightforward equipment or minor adaptations to your home and you would like to make your own arrangements. It will help you to assess your own needs and then provides details of what you can buy and where you can buy it, including local retailers. Remember that you will be responsible for the costs of whatever you decide to buy.

Or you can contact us and someone from our Equipment and Adaptations Service will get in touch to arrange an assessment to see what could make your day to day living easier. We may invite you to attend the assessment centre, visit you at home or discuss your needs with you over the phone.

Costs and contributions

If you use the online self assessment system to choose and order equipment you will be responsible for the costs of whatever you decide to buy. However, if following our assessment we agree that you need equipment to make your day to day living easier, then we will pay the full cost of that equipment, except for some smaller items.  You will be provided with information on where you can purchase these for yourself.

If you are buying your own equipment you can compare equipment prices on the 'Living made easy' website to make sure you are getting equipment at a competitive price.

Purchasing your own equipment

If you would prefer to purchase your own equipment, you can visit one of the following local suppliers.  These are locally accredited retailers who can fulfill prescriptions for equipment and have a wide knowledge of what equipment is available.
