Shared lives scheme
Many adults can’t live on their own without help and support from others. This may be because they have a physical or learning disability, mental health needs or because they are older and have become frail.
The Shared Lives Scheme offers these vulnerable adults the chance to live with families who can offer the support and encouragement they need to live as independently as possible.
Shared Lives can provide people with a permanent home, a short respite stay, or day care in an ordinary home setting in the community.
Who can be a Shared Lives carer
We need carers from all walks of life to provide homes for adults from different backgrounds. You could be younger or older, married, living with a partner or single, from any culture or religion, with or without children, a home owner or tenant.
You should be in reasonably good health and you must be able to offer safe and friendly care.
All new carers will undergo an application process which will help us gain an understanding of your way of life and assess your suitability as a Carer.

Apply to become a Shared Lives carer
Following your enquiry with the team, you may be invited to submit an application to consider becoming a Shared Lives Carer. From your enquiry you will have been provided with a unique identification number. You will need this to submit an application.
Before starting your application. Please ensure you read the “Before you Apply” documentation which is available in documents.
Through the application process there are lots of questions we ask and you will need to be prepared to have this information available while completing your application. It is important to know that once you start your application, you cannot save part way through. Therefore, please ensure you have the time to complete the application and the information available. Please take a look at the “Before you apply” information to provide you with guidance on the information we required.
As part of the application and assessment process we need to gain a professional reference from your current/previous employer and also two personal character references. Please ensure you have their permission for our team to contact them should we progress your application.
We also require a medical reference from your GP. You are required to obtain this information yourself. An example covering letter can be found in documents which you may find helpful.
We also require information from your mortgage or landlord should your application be progressed. Again you are required to obtain this information and an example covering letter is available in documents.
