Buildings or sites (designated heritage assets) are listed because they have special architectural or historic interest.
The listing is carried out by Historic England and forms part of the national Heritage list for England.
The building or site is immediately protected by law and it is an offence to carry out any changes to it without having first received listed building consent.
It may not be demolished or altered in any way that affects its character without the consent of the Council by listed building consent application.
There are approximately 200 listed buildings in the borough; descriptions of listings can be downloaded from the from the National Heritage list.
Historic England provide further guidance on listed buildings including a database which provides access to up to date information on all nationally designated heritage assets.
