The Government wants to enable more people to build or commission their own home; they have an aspiration to double the size of the self-build market. This register will provide an indication of the demand for self/custom build in Blackburn with Darwen and allow the Council to work to develop a range of suitable sites for development in this way.
Self-build usually means that you are directly involved in organising the design and construction of your new home. Custom build usually means working with a specialist developer to help you deliver your home. There may be some overlap between the two – for example some custom build developers offer the option of a serviced plot where you can design and build your own home as part of a larger scheme.
If you are registered, the Council will let you know if/when they have a suitable site in their ownership that meets your requirements. The questions are designed to give the Council a clear picture of your wishes and the type of site that would meet your requirements.
You will be asked to enter some detailed information about your current circumstances as well as details including the size, location, timescale and design of the home you would like to build. We also need to understand how the financial side of the development will work so we need some details from you about what you can afford. Your particular situation will not count for or against you. Being honest in your answers will help us understand your wishes and the best way to address them. If you are unsure about how to answer any questions please do not worry, just choose the answer that seems the ‘best fit’ or say ‘unsure’.
