Drainage and gullies

Find out about drainage and when the drains on your road will be cleaned.

If you need to report a highway flooding issue or a blocked gully, please telephone 01254 585585.

If you're worried about flooding, there is help and advice on our flooding emergencies webpage.

Blocked gullies

If a blocked gully is reported to us, we will inspect it within 10 days of getting the report. If the gully is critical, or there is a flood warning in place, we will inspect it as soon as possible.

If we decide we need to do any work to the gully, we will do it to these timescales:

  • critical gullies will be done within 10 working days. If a flood warning is in place, the work will be done as soon as possible
  • non-critical gullies which are not a flood risk either to highways or properties will be done as a part of planned maintenance, when the gully wagon is in the same ward

Back street gullies

  • critical gullies will be done within 10 working days. If a flood warning is in place, the work will be done as soon as possible
  • non-critical gullies will be included in a low level maintenance programme

Non-working gullies

  • if a gully doesn't work after being cleaned, we will force water down the connection for a maximum of 10 minutes to try to clear any blockage
  • if the connection is cleared we won't take any further action
  • if the connection is still blocked, we will request a dig down repair
    • if the blocked connection is from a critical gully, the dig down will be done within 10 days, or sooner if possible
    • if it's a non-critical connection, we will add it to the highway maintenance programme and do it on a priority basis when we have the resource

Gully cleaning schedule

We produce an annual gully cleaning schedule in April each year. Our aim is to make sure that every gully is cleaned at least once every 6 years. Each ward is visited for an average of 2 weeks per year.

All critical gullies that are likely to cause flooding are visited at least twice a year. They are inspected when we get an amber or red flood warning, and they are cleaned as necessary prior to the event.
