Fly tipping and litter

Fly-tipping means dumping rubbish illegally - this often happens outside household waste recycling centres, and includes items such as furniture or business waste.

It is illegal and as the rubbish could be hazardous is an offence under waste legislation. On conviction, the fine is up to £50,000 or six months imprisonment or both.

The offence of 'leaving litter' (Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990) states that if a person drops, throws, deposits or leaves anything so as to cause defacement in a public place, they could be committing a littering offence.
